Black Heritage Series. Slave, Freedom Fighter and Conductor on the Underground Railroad, 1820-1913. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery about 1820. When her slave master died, she and her brothers were sold and the family was going to break up. Harriet was supposed to be sent to live further south but her brothers devised a plot for all of them to escape to the North. Under the cover of darkness and following the north star, they set out. Not long into the journey, her brothers gave up and returned south and back to the plantation. Harriet's need for freedom made her continue her trek north where she eventually reached her goal. In the city of Philadelphia she became a free woman at last. While on her journey she was aided by many people along what is known as the Underground Railroad. They fed, clothed and hid escaped slaves in their homes, often in secret rooms to avoid recapture. Harriet did not forget her fellow man. She made many trips back into the South, bringing back over 300 slaves to freedom including her parents. Many times she used a wagon with a false bottom to hide the escaping slaves. She became so successful in rescuing slaves that a reward was offered for her Capture-either dead or alive. During the Civil War she became a cook for the Union Army and some say she was even a spy.
